There's a ton of things we still don't know about the universe. How exactly is the Sun's magnetic field generated? What's the physics behind jets in GRBs and active galaxies? How does star formation really work? What makes a supernova explode? There are tons of unanswered questions, and doing a good job working in those fields will get you name recognized by other astrophysicists. You don't need to get something named after you or find something completely new, you just need to do useful work.
