I have just bought a new tank pad for my motorbike?

I have just bought a new tank pad for my Bandit. I am concerned as to how to remove the old one without damaging the paintwork. The existing pad has started to part company at the lower end but is still securely fixed everywhere else. Any sensible suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.
